100 Wedding Crossword Clue Ideas (Plus Tips for Writing Your Own)

A personalised wedding crossword gives guests something to do while you're having photos taken, and gets friends and family from both sides chatting.

But coming up with clues and answers can actually be really hard (even though they're literally about you!)

We've designed dozens of personalised wedding crosswords for couples, and there are always consistent questions that most couples go for.

So here are 100 ideas to get you started, grouped by theme, along with tips for making them fun to solve.

What is a sip and solve?

A sip and solve is a large crossword about the couple, displayed at the wedding for guests to complete over drinks.

It's become a popular wedding game because it gets guests talking and works for all ages.

How many clues does a wedding crossword need?

Between 15 and 30 clues works well for most weddings. That's enough to keep guests busy through the drinks reception without becoming a chore.

Aim for a mix: a few easy clues anyone can answer, some that only close friends will know, and one or two that will start a debate.

Tips for writing good wedding crossword clues

  • Keep answers short. One or two words work best. Long answers make the grid hard to build.
  • Make most clues solvable by most guests. If only your best friend knows the answer, it stalls the whole puzzle.
  • Use details from the day itself. Your venue, your cake flavour and your first dance are fair game, because guests can look around for the answers.
  • Avoid private jokes that need explaining. If you'd have to tell the story for it to make sense, leave it out.
  • Check spelling carefully. Every answer has to fit the grid exactly, so double-check names and places.

Where to put your wedding crossword

Set it up somewhere guests naturally gather, such as the drinks reception, near the bar or by the entrance.

An easel at eye height makes it easy for a few people to solve at once. Leave a pen beside it and let guests fill in answers throughout the day.

Can guests win a prize?

They can. Some couples ask guests to write their names next to answers they solve, then announce whoever filled in the most during the speeches. A bottle of fizz is a popular prize.

Turn your clues into a crossword sign

Once you've chosen your clues, we'll turn them into a personalised wedding crossword printed on a large, wipe-clean board.

Send us up to 40 clues and answers, and we'll email a digital proof within 48 hours.

Each board comes with a pen, so guests can start solving as soon as they arrive.

I founded Wedding Puzzles & Games with my fiancée Charlotte after a game we made for our engagement party got so many compliments that we turned it into a business to fund our own wedding. We're based in Belfast and you'll find us at wedding fairs across the area, but most of our games go out online. We're very happy to have been a part of over 100 couples' special day!
